SOCRATES, son of Sophroniscus and Phaenarete, was born at Athens, sometime between 471 B.C. and June 469 B.C.
As a youth he learnt gymnastics and music; and later geometry , astronomy and doctrines of the leaders of Greek thought and culture. He began life as a sculptor; but after he had a divine vision became a teacher of ethics. He had an unhappy marriage but was well known in society. He sons were dull. He became a member of the Senate but his teachings raised antagonism because they were against common convention and belief. He was accused thus:
“Socrates is guilty, firstly, of denying the gods recognized by the state and introducing new divinities, and, secondly, of corrupting the young.” He was condemned to death, to drink hemlock and die. For 39 days he was imprisoned and spent his time conversing about his philosophy. He declared ‘a wise man will face death with a smile.’

- It is time for us to say farewell- I go to die and you to live, yet only God knows which is better.
- It is not wisdom or knowledge that enables poets to write but inspiration- like the prophets who give sublime messages without knowing what they mean.
- Remember those who praise you may not be your well-wishers but those who gently point out your faults may be.
- Remember what is improper to do is also improper to speak of.
- Your good name is the richest jewel you can own, for like fire, it is easy earn and hard to preserve.
- Of course you must marry, you will be happy if you get a good wife and a bad one may make you a philosopher.
- From virtue comes wealth so go about improving your soul.
- Read what other men have written so that you can benefit easily what others have worked so hard for.
- There is evil in false words- so evil that they will infect the soul.
- Intense hatred comes from intense desire.

thanks for sharing this. a whole school of philosophy believes that Socrate's presented the world with a rational man's philosophy first. I am great fan of his method of understanding truth. :-)
